Ok, so I'v been driving a good 7 months now, as a named driver on my mum's policy for her car.

Time has come to get a set of wheels of my own and get involved.

The past month or so I'v been looking at your typical cheap insurance cars, Clio's, 106's etc. The only problen is, they are no longer cheap to insure! :relieved: Cheapest quote I can get, as a named driver under mum's policy for bog standard 10 year old Clio, garaged and everything £1600.

So, I am wondering... Is Classic Car insurance the way forward? The loophole?

Does anyone know if you qualify for Classic Car insurance at 17?

And does anyone have any suggestions for what I could go for?

Old Mini's etc.

Cheers (y)

If I remember right, a classic policy doesn't cover a car that's used for every day use. It can only be used occasionally. In other words, you need a policy on another car. Classic insurance comes with a mileage limit, usually up to around 6k a year. The lower the mileage, the lower the premium. Also, many will have a minimum age limit of 21.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

No you will not get classic insurance, there is no "loophole"! AC most are 25, and you can use the car anytime its just the mileage thats limited!

I think some companies differ in age requirements. Yeh, I wouldn't be using the car all that much anyway, under 7k a year probably. Think its just a case of researching it and ringing around all the Classic Car insurance companies... Can't wait :relieved:

Good luck finding classic insurance, I've been trying to find it for under 25's and I'm 21, rang up the company and told them the car and they said 'no sorry that car is to powerful for you' even though I've been driving for 3 years now. Best of just paying the price that all other young drivers have to pay.

Yeh looks like I might just have to do that alright.

Out of interest, can you become a named driver on classic car insurance?

If so, can you become a named driver at 17 as you are technically not the policy holder?

Feck some serious dollars for a 10year old clio.

I feel sorry for the young ones these days. But even when i was 1st on the go, think the premiuns used to be silly.

Getting harder to cruise these days.

Classic car insurance at 17?? You're having a laugh!

I think you should stay on your mum's policy for another five months to get a full year of driving behind you. Some companies may credit you with one years NCB on your own policy when you get it.

No car will be cheap to insure for a 17 year old with no NCB - they never were.

Do you start building a no claims bonus even as a named driver though?

Insurance is just ridiculous, increase in VAT didn't help either. Just can't bring myself to pay £1600+ a year, especially when I'll only be using the car a couple of nights a week and at the weekend!

Bog standard old mini, under mum's policy, normal insurance, £1500 :worried:

Good luck mate. When I was 17 the fiesta was reg'ed and insured in my granny's name. Still had to pay something like £1300 and that was a 1.3 fiesta :worried: Now im 22 driving a ST500 in my own name for £1200 got to love Greenlight. Just got to do what we all had to do buddy. Drive a small car until your a wee bit older....

Doesnt have to be bad like. When i was 18 I had a BMW 318ci no power but it was mint driving that at 18 like.

I work for an insurance company and I know that in order to qualify for our classic insurance premium you need
To be 25 ! We cover the likes of aviva , Zurich and cherish cars

When I first started driving I bought a 1.6 megane coupe and the cheapest quote I got was 1,100 ! It came down to 900 when I got the 206 after a year and it's now back up to 925 since buying the lexus ! :worried: ! Get your own policy and get your no claims
Up , the first year is always the hardest

i insured a classic impreza for 1950 when i was 19 but i had 2 years no claims. It was only a 2litre sport though. Im 25 now and a turbo impreza is still a pain to insure lol

*edit* in thinking about it i may have been just turned 20

My insurance at 17 was £4500

I had enough saved to do the engine work and that all went on insurance instead

Got the engine work done at a later date instead - but there was no way on earth i was telling the insurance company about 180+hp of k-series when they already had their fist up my ass for the standard Metro GTi.

10 years later, paying £197 a year fully comp (or the new equivalent) for the passat - the disco goes up to £209

first year on a 1.0 Arosa at 17 years of age was £1300.... although insuring a 1.6 at 19 was only like £100 more.

Do the conversion yourself?

Nope, she's silver, A140. Not the newest model. Nippy enough to be fair for that size of car. Why do you ask? :grinning:

My first insurance was £2400. I was 18, had almost a year driving and it was for a '95 Escort 1.6 Mexico. Would only have been maybe 2-3 hundred less on a 1.2 Clio, so I just got the car I wanted instead.

Direct Line give NCB providing you take out your next policy with them

which is fine, do a year with them then shop around with the NCB you have built up

Rover's!
Honestly lad, a years NCB will half your insurance on the same car with a good shopping around.

My advice, as many will suggest, buy your classic car that needs work, and and work away on it now and make that something you will insure when you have built your no claims.

Ive had some classic quotes now im 28 and they are amazing. Honestly, build the no claims and you will reap the rewards in a few years.

Patience young jedi........ ;)

i had 2 years as a named driver on a policy, got 2 years no claims when i went on my own nice and cheap (y) but when renewal came they said i only had 1 years no claims and it wipes the named driver experience so my insurance went up instead of down lol id say rack up one years driving experience and in the mean time save save save
