Just a quick update to this; at the minute they seem to be very strict on brake discs.

If there's the slightest mark/rust/pitting at all on the disc it will fail. I've spoken to a local mechanic about it and he said that they have changed more brake discs this year alone than he has in his entire career.

I've had three vehicles fail on brake discs one after the other. Two of them I had to put new discs on but the other I just cleaned up with the grinder and took it back.

Does anyone have any information regarding the impending changes to the MOT in our country? Ive heard a lot of stories recently. A couple of the things I have been hearing are 1. There will be no re-test fee, it will cost the same every time - the full amount. 2. Aftermarket suspension of any type will fail MOT. Surley no 2 is nonsense?

Frick, would like to think number 2 is nonsence.. what bout dealers who have aftermarket suspension fitted standard? How can the MOT prove it isnt from factory, obviously coilies would be an obvious one...

I think they need to see it light up for a few seconds and then go out again lad.

Hi there, I have a little Ford Fiesta race car which I would like to MOT and drive on the road. Are there seperate regulations to suit race/rally cars? The car is totally standard engine wise but things like steering lock and air bags have had to be dismantled in order to suit the race regulations. What happens if I try to MOT it?
    Thanks,

I have a 1976 Mini due MOT in the next month, does anyone know how this will affect me? Is there anything that it would be exempt from? It has coilovers but isnt sitting too low, are these ok?

my understanding is that the coilover springs have to be tight once the car is jacked up all round on the sills.

Hi there, I understand that ok, its just that to be legal it must have an MOT (AFAIK) and the question is, will it be issued with this new MOT if the Air bags and steering lock are dismantled? It is not really practical to have the air bag and steering lock functioning for the MOT and then dismantle them every time you drive to the race circuit.
What happens with a MK2 Escort? is it deemed legal to issue an MOT even if the steering lock is removed? I know they all came with steering locks when new.

Anyone failed MOT for no CAT at the min? Reason i ask, is id need to firstly, buy (borrow) a CAT, cus my "welded" piece out, and either weld flanges on, so i can bolt the cat in, or get it welded in.. Not sure i can be botherd, unless i reli reli reli have to .

Theres a date of manufacture that was brought in regarding needing a CAT. Not 100% what date it was.
My mx5 passed without a CAT, full straight system, not a problem

I think that pre 1980 type stuff - no test. 1981-2003 or something emmisions based test (on a sliding scale) 2004-current needs to have a cat. Something along those lines anyway.

Not sure if this was asked elsewhere.. can't remember, so apologies if its a double question

Standard 17" alloys on the i30 came fitted with a TPMS (Tyre pressure monitoring system)
However I have fitted the 18" rx8s, which obviously dont have any form of TPMS, thus flagging up on the dash with an illuminated TPMS light, signalling a fault because it cant pick up the TPMS monitors... because there not on the car.. duh..

If i turned up to MOT with 4 legal tyres on the 18's, everything being solid and legit etc.. yet had this TPMS light on my dash due to the fact the standard 17s aren't on, because there winter use only if anything, and the tyres are low tread when getting MOT'd.. am i going to fail? because a tell tale light, TPMS, is on my dash?

It was on the car when I got it, not something I'd need as Im rather good at telling when my tyre pressure is not right.

Would it be an instant fail? or is there some form of discretion.
