Doing a bit of research for a project and I'm curious as to which are the lightest modernish (ie. not Hillman Imp ;)) engines out there?

Has to be normally aspirated, capacity in the region of 1.3 to 1.8 and good for a easy and reliable 150+ bhp.

I can think of a few obvious choices but I've no idea how they figure on the scales.

Thanks.

a bike engine hyabusa or the like or they are plenty of alloy block car engines that are fairly light, 1.7 puma engine should easy see 150bhp with not to much work and are very light but can be a little soft.

K-series? *twitch* 105hp from totally standard 1.4, just slap in a proper head gasket and you should be cooking. It was designed to be small and light (for Rover's Mini replacement that never was).

Peugeot/Citroen Mi16 1905cc - 160bhp standard with no fancy valve timing required, all alloy (Later ones had an iron block)

Capable of good outputs.

the block in them is supposed to be quite heavy. i can remember hearing that is very similar in size to the 2 litre block

Your prob right. As you can interchange parts like put a ve head on a SR20de etc. Although the N1 SR16VE is 197bhp but like hens teeth.

EDIT: Wikipedia threw this engine code up: DOHC K16 VHPD & its 192bhp apparently.

toyota 2zz engine as fitted to celica 190,toyota t sport corolla etc and now to the latest lotus--afaik its circa 192 hp, tunable to well over 200hp and can be supercharged up to 280 or so

Its all aluminium engine or if your looking for less power the 1zz engine is circa 140bhp

Both are 1800 cc

may be more modern, but its not necessarily better. the XU9J4 has a very advanced head design, and massive valves as standard - seeing as how it was developed for the group-B turbo-16 engine.

what is the duratec's power output in standard tune? And its also 100cc bigger in capacity. Its certainly more popular, because there are a load more of them made.

The Mi16 is still in some use today in the rally world - eg the 206 WRC

Rover 1.8, easily 150-200, up to 250+ in race tune. Or Honda, easily 200+, 300 in race tune. Both reliable, loads of bits for either, plenty of tuners around.

Rally boys use Ford engines a lot, as do a lot of Kit cars.

Have no idea what either these are like weight wise.

surely old alloy 8valve engines would be the lightest ... 1905cc alloy 205 gti engine or 1.6 ..get 150bhp from both of them im sure

Rover K-series as mentioned is one of the lightest i have ever worked with

Honda K20a is as light if not lighter than the b-series (200+hp very easily)

Starlet Turbo lump - not sure on details, or weight, but just an idea

little roadster!
I was going to suggest the venerable 4efte as their of good abundance, but then remembered its NA your after :/

if you fancied doing a build, get a 5efhe, forge it, strap on a Disco potato, and laugh lots.

Alternatively im shocked to see no one mentioning the Rotary engine, originally intended to be light for aircraft, and can be ported to see more power, add throttle bodies and your on a winner!!!!
