Came home from work to find my neighbours car windows have been smashed, but nothing has been stolen by the looks of it. He is away on Hollidays and I can't get hold of him. I did contact the police, to inform on the crime, informed there is CCTV near by, but as I am not the registered keeper, they cannot take my statement and call out to view CCTV. The real owner has to make the report, however I have at least a ref number.
My worry is - rain will do more damage, or I cannot leave it there for a few more days as it will be destroyed more.
What should I do? I could possible get his flat keys and car keys and I could try to move it somewhere safer, and my car insurance policy allows to drive other car vehicles - but would that not destroy any evidence etc. etc.??
He is a good friend and neighbour and I just wouln't like to close my eyes to this.
    Cheers for any advice!

Stick a car cover over it?

I'm just worried wee hoodies, would destroy the car even more as he is back only in one week!

if there is nothing stolen then is it not just a case of moving it? ie somebody just smashed the windows? they didnt enter the car?

also, if the windows are smashed they are maybe just waiting to see if it gets moved & therefore there is someone in the house

whereas if you leave it, they'll soon realise the house is empty also

stick some latex gloves on you, that way in worst case scenario & you do get blamed & goes to court you'll get off with it as the DNA evidence wont stand up in court

I would clingfilm/tape the windows and keep an eye on it. Wouldn't move it in case you get in trouble for driving without the owners consent.

Was able to get hold of him finally. I got into his flat, got his keys and will pass the keys over in 20mins to his brother to hide the car away. The neighbour will be able to call insurance company and get the Autoglass out tomorrow.
I'm so glad I can get it away before any more damage gets done. But as he is only back next Sunday, CCTV prob. will be erased and no chance of even finding who did it.
Thanks for all advices, much appreciated guys!

I just know how helpful the local people are, and I wanna repay with the same. I know I would be crying if that would be my car though, hopefully karma will get them.
And cheers Gambit for the tip about flat, would never thought of that!

It's shop mate, but I went in and asked it already, the angle was too big to see anything, so no use :( Car keys are handed over to his brother and car is safely gone!

If it's on private property [driveway] it's no issue. I'd move it and tape it up.

It was on a public road therock, hence why I didn't want to leave it for further 5 minutes.

Awesome man. Kudos to you. If all neighbours were like you the world would be cool. Sounds like your in a nice village or area as opposed to a town.

here in London the counts just walk through you as opposed to even saying hello.
