Well after buy a clio 200 with cup pack still sitting to high so down the coilovers road it is, but which ones? Been looking either kw's or the latest rant and raving ones are XYZ's. Anyone tired this in a 197/200, if so feed back welcome or any other manufactures that are top rated.
I had KW V1's and they were great. However it will cost ALOT of money to get the car to handle even close to what the cup pack will offer. Cup pack has been developed to work with the car and unless using as a pure track car - it will be very hard to get the handling spot on for road use without excessive amounts of money. Seems a shame to waste the cup pack and throw in coilovers just for the looK!
Could you not then just get lowered springs suited to the cup spec chassis's set up to bring the height down a bit, rather than shelling out buckets for top notch coilovers and having to set them up etc? Just a thought.
NO........ NO............. NO................ These wee cars are not about looks, they are ALL about handling..... You will WRECK this wee car lowering it........... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're better off with adjustable coilovers so you can change the damping/rebound to suit. I'm not sure how adjustable the suspension on 200's are as standard but if you added adjustable camber arms at the rear and get a PROPER geo set up done, by the likes of Ali Burrows, I think you'd retain the comfort and driveability of the standard car.
whip out the sachs suspension from the trophy, is it not height adjustable?maybe im wrong or maybe the 200 has sachs shocks?
Can you not just buy eibach or similar springs for it? I'd imagine you'll have to spend at least £1K on coilovers to get units of the same quality as those you are taking out. Not if its done right he won't
Aaron Im not sure that exclamation mark key is working there, try it again . Philpott the motor looks great as it is, I personally wouldn't be fiddling about with the suspension just to have it sit afew mm lower.
if your going to put coilovers in the car, at least buy them and give them to someone who knows how to Set up suspension properly! but that will cost the guts of a thousand quid! Eibach sportlines FTW!
Best thing you have ever said..... Just bring it to Germany in May, with us and have a bit of fun in the car.......!!!!!!!
I'm looking later in the summer to go, May a bad time for me with exams you got anymore trips in the pipe line?
Amos and Ross or talking nonsense. Not true at all my 197 on V1s handles better than most cars on the twisties not alot than can stay with it. It can corner far faster and harder with zero roll. Confidence inspiring. Cup suspension is far overrated.... I had a guy down to trade a Trophy for mine and he couldn't get over how well mine handled. His on the other hand was awful, So much fo £4000 sachs suspension. Get them in lad....but I would have to question why you wasted money on the cup pack if you had any intention of ripping it out?
Tim - cup suspension is deveoped by Renault for a car which they make with a budget far bigger that any aftermarket suspension manufacturer - the results are going to be FAR better matched for road driving (as i know Chris has little track interest) and any more spirited driving along the road. Unless paying for pure race spec items or spending thousands on fully adjustable coilovers - you will never get as good a compromise between comfort and handling. As Gee said - the fact the non cup packed 200s were recommended to be better than the cup packed ones for UK driving shows how much of a jump the cup pack is from the standard suspension.
Got the car for a price with the cup pack, that the cup pack was given to me really lol. My aim is to remove gaps betwwen wheels and arches but dont want to loss handling of the award winning setup.
Its still way overrated and compromised for Joe Bloggs for economy and comfort on the road ; its mildly enhanced for the track day/fast road enthusiast. its not set up at all for racing or track use... I mean come on what is it? stiffer and slightly lower springs. Now these springs and struts who makes them? Who knows certainly ain't anyone worthy enough for Renault to credit anyone in a similar fashion to Brembo brakes or the Recaro seats. The 197 Cup had 3mm lower and stiffer springs....revolutionary. If those springs were say 10mm lower it would be even better but compromised for uk road use. Its not even a coilover setup and doesn't even permit adjustable damping or rebound or ride height like the majority of decent aftermarket coilover systems.....go figure. The likes of KW, Bilstein and H&R spend massive ammounts on their coilovers every year. Most global race series are supplied by these companies. Le mans, DTM, Asian GT series, most cup single make series to name a few. They certainly dont use this overated road car cup suspension. Its the first thing to get ditched. Its a marketing thing. Dont be fooled. Please also remember the cup pack is not just the spring and strut.... The ammount of money you throw at something does not directly relate to how good the end product is.... LOL - "award wining set-up" What awards has it one? It certainly gets great reviews in all the major journals. It does a good job. But it certainly can be improved upon so lets not get carried away.
IIRC the Cup and non-cup use the same dampers, the Cups just have additional valving to make them stiffer.
Gee is correct...same part number. So that means it all boils down to a set of slightly lower and stiffer springs. And a few extra valves to stiffen things up. Amazing what the placebo effect has on folk. Pub banter FTW!
award wining set-up meaning best in class by all the major journals. Im with you Tim as you said last week to me yours handles better which I think it would but until I try it for myself cant say jack. Thats way I started this thread to get people thoughts/feedback etc
For coilovers Id reccomend Eibach or KW, if you just want springs Eibach. These are the best coilovers for sensible money still, pm me if you need any prices
