I've done it by phone, took all of 2 mins. As long as the car is MOT'd and insured, it's all hunky dory.

I never bother going to post office or sending off the form anymore. Over the phone take 2-3 mins max but an online option would be good.

WTF is with the big secret about renewing by telephone? Ive done it before and there is not a mention of it on their website or my renewal. The only contact number online is 0845 402 4000

Its a pain in the ass, cant renew tax in an ordionary post office with the new keepers slip, so you have to go to the tax office which is a ballbag when you work all week!

Tell me about it - the only place I heard of and could find the number was on here. I spent ages searching through the DVLNI site looking for it.

I'm convinced it used to be on the site, and they removed it - probably because it was too convenient.

Or, more likely - because the staff had to process the application there and then rather than going and hanging around the photocopier for half an hour gossiping, then a quick spin into the subsidised canteen or the starbucks franchise for a bit of a break from their stressful day.

    In fact -

    I just had a look on archive.org

    Look at this

DVLNI - Renewing Your Tax - Vehicle in Your Name

They used to advertise it plain as day.

Now the link to renew tax on their site redirects to this

    Owning a vehicle | NIDirect

Looks like the reason we can't tax our cars online, and why it's a struggle to do it online is so all the Civil Servants in Coleraine don't lose their jobs.

Not sure I'm in agreement with Alex Attwood on this, it's a huge inconvenience for a lot of us to be expected to drive to our local DVA office to tax our car.

I know that mate, but it's often far too busy. The article even mentions the lack of investment in the phone system for taxing cars.

They are simply not investing in tech that will a) make it easier for the customer to get their car taxed, and b) save the taxpayer a fortune by automating a service that currently takes 300 people to do.

If this was a private business it would simply not make sense, therefore the 300 people would swiftly be replaced by a computerised system to allow online/phone services to be improved.

    So inefficient it's laughable.

or the post office:confused: Only 'inconvinient' if it's a new car you've just bought and only have keepers slip..

I dont see why they cant sort out the phone system a bit more however at least.
