Some cars are so damn expensive! Is it the name? the model? the engine? the rarity? I wanted to pick up a 'cheap' land rover defender for racking up the mountains, forest parks etc and a decked vdub cant do that. I soon realised that cheap defenders dont exist, your still talking 3k for a 1988 rough bucket with a million miles on the clock! What have you came across that is extremely overpriced for how much car you actually get?
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3607768.htm R500.. really not much to it for £30k I agree with you tho, i was thinking about changing my navara for a defender and fooking hell they are dear, £20k + for a rattle box TD5, i mean my Navara is now worth half of that has heated seats, leather, Nav, MP3 and the Defender has a Blow heater.
This is why I love modern Rovers/Mg's. Bad reputation, bad values and resale and bargains everywhere. IMO Freelander mk1's are a example, you still have 1999 cars with the old L series diesel engines going for £1800plus in base spec. Joke.
The Defenders hold their money really well too. My father in law was looking at getting a new one and I was surprised at how cheap they were, I always thought they were more.
The Mk1 Freelander is possibly one of the worst motor vehicles ever to wobble out from Longbridge any factory. Your money would be far better spent on a Ford Maverick/Nissan Terrano. Faster, more reliable, cheaper, more home comforts and just as capable off the tarmac. Ideal mountain racker!
Defenders go for ever if taken care of. My 1988 defender lay for 7 years.didnt move an inch.the shed it was in actually fell down on top of it. I went to the mans house to collect it and had to lift the shed off it. Towed it about twice the length of itself and away it went. And when your talkin £7 for a headlight and less than £35 for a door it's worth the initial layout. As long as the chassis is sound it shouldn't cost a fortune
Jap 4x4 is your answer without a shadow of a doubt. Landrovers do not go on forever, landcruisers etc kick their ass. Old landrovers are howere relatively easy to maintain and thats why farmers love having one kicking about. Oh and defenders rust like hell. My l200 warrior was 4 years old with 49K on the clock and it was 8.5 grand and even came with comfortable seats and luxuries that defender owners can only dream of, like a heater
I agree. I know of a few owners that have never had any bother with theirs, one of which is on over 100k.
Can only comment on the old Ford stuff here, but they are some serious numbers being thrown out: http://www.gumtree.com/search?q=07703570520&search_location=United Kingdom Still and all, quality forecourt
i just think defenders are just plain smug would rather have an isuzu trooper - such a powerhouse with more old skool-no nonsence engines
I've been looking for a defender for work and a bit of off-roading and your right, theres very little below the 3k mark. They hold their value extremely well How many late 80s mistubishi, nissan, toyota 4x4s do you see on the roads? Very few I'd imagine. If looked after, a defender will go on....and on..... and on.
They're like a Meccano kit. It's like saying you've had the same axe since 1985 but you've changed the handle five times and the head twice. Also if it spends half it's life broken down in a shed it shouldn't really count
Ae86 twincams are overpriced rot boxs yes they do circles but they ain't 7-10k worth they are sellin for
A car is worth what it sells for, That is what worth is. If it sells, thats its value. A car is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay.
i was just giving my opinion like ever single other post in the thread fook me i know they will still sell for stupid money but IMO they are all overpriced not saying they are the only car but one of the first ones that came into my head.
I think in this climate its hard to value anything accurately....many cars/jeeps dont take a linear decrease in age vs value these days, depending on what it is of course. And like anything else, if it becomes the 'in' thing to have, then up goes the value, and when it 'goes out of fashion', they are worth less. Ae86's are a fine example but imo are way overpriced...would love one but would never pay that money for an 80's corolla thats crying for clearways, but if thats what they are worth then fair do's!.
yeah ive heard stories of this but at 82k ours is yet to give any bother and surely any engine will need parts replaced at some point and if it goes another 82k after that with no problems id say its well worth the bother.
