In Germany, part of the motorway network has variable speed limits indicated by electronic signs on gantries over the road. This means that in good conditions when traffic is light the signs are blank and there is no speed limit. There is still a limit around slip roads and the variable speed limit is also used to reduce speed in poor visibility etc.
Would you like to see this system on our motorways (not dual carriageways)?

70 is Fine IMO, 100 is just too much, as everyone will be expecting you to Do 100, and that just wastes Fuel and not every car can do 100

IMO 70 is enough but the tolerances should be a lot lower

Our road conditions in NI are pathetic to be honest - main motorways with great big dips all over the country, plus the fact that the majority of NI motorway users do not know how to use one properly.

The standards are awful and hence why 70, to me, seems enough! Plus more economical :p

And another note - I would not want to beside or behind a citreon ax attempting to reach 100mph or the likes!

70 is fine. I doubt youll get done for up to 80 anyway so Id leave it as is.

coming down the M2 there and a tit in a voyager sitting in the fast lane with the slow lane empty is a reminder than most people couldnt drive their finger up there own hole.

I don't think the standard of driving over here would be compatible with a higher speed limit and definitely not variable speed limits depending on conditions etc.

Realistically, we only have two motorways here and both of them are tragic both in terms of surface condition and road users - not to mention them being relatively short and on/offslips being in quite quick succession.

Getting enough electronic gantries and the system to run them will cost more than it is actually worth....you aren't going to save that much time going 100mph rather than 70mph, most people seem to be happy enough sitting at 70mph or below anyway. Basically it would be a waste of time and money over here, it would be much better put to use on actually improving the condition of the road.

Speaking of that....WTF are they doing between Lisburn and Belfast on the M1?

I can't understand the mentality of why drivers even do this. Inside lane of a motorway has perhaps 3 cars and the outside lane has maybe 10 cars to the same amount of road. Instead of all these speeding ads I think the DOE should really start a bit of a lane discipline campaign. Not that the majority of drivers would take any heed but it winds me up that much that I try my best to avoid using motorways now. I've started flashing the lights lately, some move over, and some, judging by their disgusted reaction, must think that flashing the lights meant I wanted to stick one up their hole.

I voted 70 is enough, due to the sort of arsewits that use motorways in this country.

Likely patching the craters in the inside lane as they've done on the M2 the last few weeks. Done a good job too. Shame the tossers who did the hill section couldn't have done a similar. (y)

time and a place, plebs on the motorway that fcuking dive into a gap when you keep a safe distance, im sick of yelling an indicator does not mean im going so watch out, it means i intend to move!!! w4nker5

and just while having a quick moan, these a55holes that cause you to break because they think if theyre established on the road it doesnt matter a fcuk ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh they do my tits in!

standard here is shocking however the main people targeted are those with seatbelts/mobiles/speeding/drinking, general standard needs targeted imo and not with fines and points more a 3 lesson from instructor punishment, thats how you improve safety. Not i need 3 tickets issued to meet the targets (not police fault on the ground, the plebs above them calling the shots)

Yes, a poll, good man :p

100 would be way too much here, given standard of roads and drivers.

    70 is too slow though.

80 would be about right, same as south of the border, and most of Europe.

The standard of driving in NI is not sufficient for any speed limit to be increased.

The drivers here (and in the south) are among the worst in europe.

Even over the water lane discipline etc is a lot better.

NI driving - blinkers on, look straight ahead, let no-one out, no surrender.

I reckon the motorway limit should be increased to 80, as 70 can feel too slow when there's a clear stretch, although with most of our motorways being only 2-lane, it could cause more problems than it solves. I also think people who do 90 - 100+ on an empty motorway in good conditions shouldn't be heavily punished. I do think however that other speed limits should be reduced, such as the 20mph flashing sign limits that have been trialled around primary schools up round the north coast at school start/end times, they're a good idea.

I agree that there seems to be a lack of education here as regards lane use, I tend to give people 5 - 10 secs to move left then I get on the headlights, if they then don't take the hint I'll undertake...

I think they mean Lane 1, 2 and 3 Stevie, i've never seen it refferred to in the highway code as Slow and Fast lanes...lol

IMO, i believe 70 is quick enough when you see what damage is caused when a car leaves the carriageway at that speed..

I also believe tolerances should be lowered, at present ours far exceed that of the mainland..

I think 45mph would be good tbh. Then I wouldnt feel like such a d!ck and wouldnt feel that Im going dangerously slow
