Just seen this when checking the news back home. I think this is way better than crushing the recovered cars!! Put them to a good use!

BBC News - Crime gang's Audi 4x4 now police patrol car

A £40,000 car which once belonged to criminals in the north of Glasgow is now being used by the police in the fight against serious crime. The black Audi Q7 was seized by Strathclyde officers as a part of a police operation.
It has now been emblazoned with the force's livery and will be used by the force's Gangs Task Force.
Scotland's Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is due to inspect the 4x4 before it begins street patrols.

Thats what should happen, has happened to vehicles HMRC seize for years.. They use them as normal patrol vehicles.

The vehicles that are currently being seized for no insurance by ourselves are currently being given to Technical colleges for use in their Automotive Programmes and also to work on to use as Vehicles to use in an up and coming project involving Police and Trackskills that will be released to the press soon..

Good to see that there is a use for them after being confiscated. Will free up money elsewhere to spend rather on new cars.

I wonder if the Lyons' owned the Q7?

When i arrived over here my neighbour informed me that the most notorious crime gang in Glasgow is the Lyons family.

Needless to say when im asked for my name when making a restaurant reservation or similar im always a bit apprehensive!

It all depends on how generous the recovery men are because at the end of the day if a vehicle isnt claimed or is forfeited at the roadside then ultimately it is his/her yard the vehicle will need to be stored in for umpteen days weeks months..

Most of the one's we deal with under the Nationwide recovery scheme are happy to donate them to our project and also deliver them in most instances, all the require is the nominal fee they get for the initial recovery.

Most of the vehicles suitable for this project are Astra sized/shaped and are 1600cc but we are also using diesel vehicles.

The initial plan is for the colleges to use the vehicles for automotive purposes, bend fix repair them and get them to some sort of standard that meets the minimum standard required for trackskills, they will then take them onto the track with a trackskills mentor and hopefully be able to take some tips from the mentor that would be useful on the road. Along side this scheme they would also be getting advice on road safety and basic vehicle maintenance.

It WILL NOT be racing on the track more of a scheme where points are awarded for driving safely and skilfully, at no point will there be 2 cars competing on the track against clocks etc

Points will be tallied up and then hopefully the winning college awarded with some form of recognition.

Hopefully it will lead onto cross border colleges and schools taking part.

Also vehicles seized that are definately unsafe and not fit for road again are sold to the NIFRS for a nominal fee for use in their training where the vehicle needs to be cut for casualty rescues..

As i said all in respect of the colleges all should be revealed further in the near future..

I drove behind a Porche Carerra with police stickers in Washington DC. The plate read SIEZED :p

Better use of the taxpayers money than paying to crush one vehicle and then buying a new vehicle for the police

I'd always thought that the expensive stuff was auctioned off and the cheapies crushed.

I thought seized cars were destroyed?

Like the idea of them being put to good use though, they could even be auctioned off with proceeds going to the public purse as far as I am concerned.

Interesting. Was out on a day last year with Trackskills, part of a project where a bunch of teenagers had been tinkering about with old scrappers. A DPP road safety programme of some sort for young people.

Sounds like this is getting formalised a bit? It was a good project for all involved I think, and a good day at the track to top it off (except for the lad who dropped his phone under the seat in the Rover, lol, took some coaxing to get it out :p ).

Personally i think the idea of auctioning them off would be a good idea and put something back into the purse as such but i think someone mentioned difficulties in doing that..

It's a shame because its amazing some of the vehicles that are seized under the No insurance legislation, surprisingly its not just your typical scrapper/runabout..

The project you were at was probably the Limavady Custom Cruisers one, they have had one running now through Trackskills and their college for a couple of years and because of that success this has given one of my bosses the idea of expanding it out to all the regional colleges. The same folk up at Limavady are the one's orgainsing the Question and Answer night on the 25th involving Roads Policing, PPS, DPP, Insurance representative from a local NI Based brokers, a Solicitor specialising in Road Traffic, MOT staff and also members of the DVA(NI) Licensing dept.

They have had a Motor club running alongside their college course work and hold regular evenings where Road Safety, car detailing, guest speakers etc etc come along, these vary from the likes of Meguiars to Eugene Donnelly to Roads Policing etc etc..

Sorry meant to say, if a vehicle isn't collected within 14 days then it's the decision of the Recovery agent to crush it or to wait and hold on to it before crushing it..
