This is the second time now I've phoned a dealer about a car, to told it was the mechanics. The mechanic was off but I am to ring back when he is there and he can explain more about the car. I guess it's handy for the mechanic, but does it circumvent the statutory warranty offered by dealers i.e. it would be a private sale?
Sounds like the dealer is just advertising the car on the mechanic's behalf and it would just be a private sale mate.
I often find that the worst car you can buy is a mechanics car. They get threw together on the cheap as a mechanic can generally repair rather than replace parts, which isn't always a good thing. The situation you are referring to regarding the warranty is something you'd need to take up with the dealer in question and see if he is going to sell it through the business, or if he is just going to let you deal direct with the mechanic and buy it as a private sale. The dealer may well not know much about the car personally, which is why he told you to wait on the mechanic for info, but without being any party involved in the deal, it's impossible to say how they'll sell it.
heard a story lately of a w202 merc owned by a mechanic who sold it on because it was too much hassle changing a droplink
I know plenty of mechanics, and unless I was owning a car of theirs for buttons, I wouldn't even entertain 1...
Its true, you spend all day getting paid to fix a car, last thing you would want to do is maintain your own car in your own time while not even getting paid. There generally hanging together
Well I'd say it depends on who the mechanic is really! My cars have always been kept 100% and I'd only ever sell a car if its in great order, wouldn't sell it on just because it needs abit of work! Give the fella a ring and see what he says, it would be stupid not to as say its been very well maintained!
I wouldnt rule it out, but it would need to be cheap to allow for ya to likely put a few things right and give it a good proper check over. A mechanic is the best man to know when to think to himself "about time i god shot of this thing before it needs a engine/clutch/gearbag"
He's also the best man to sort out a quick 'DFR' fix or to hide a problem temporarily. Can't do it to a customers car because they'll land back with it but a sold as seen motor... different story.
I agree to a certain extent, but i also know of 3 mechanics that take extreme care of all their cars. altho they are all in their 20's and early 30's and still 'love what they do' if you could say that's a reason lol.
x1000. I'm a mechanic and I don't give a rats ass about any cars I've owned lol. I treat my bikes like babies but the cars get all sorts of problems ignored/shoddily repaired. Why replace a worn track rod end when a drop of windscreen bond tightens it up nicely for MOT? Mechanics. Couldn't trust the buggers
I would always have thought a mechanic would have given the car whatever it needs and made sure it was 100%. But it depends on the person and car. Probably more chance of this if the car was an Escort Cosworth, compared to a 405.
I know 2 decent mechanics pretty well, and both of them take very good car of their cars ...... one won't even take his out if there's a hint of rain.
Have to say any mechanic that doesn't look after his own car properly for sure aint the type I would take my own car too. Any of the mechanics I use treat there cars like baby's and they want for nothing even there workhorses etc. Its like saying that guys a builder but look at the shed he lives in, it's usually quite the opposite. Any Meachnic willing to take short cuts in his own car Wont think twice about doing the same on a customers.
this is for sure the case with you mark . but by saying its a mechanics car is always viewed upon as this car must be alright however i reckon most of said mechanics dont have ant qualifications and they are just refered to as MECHANICS
So now we're just assuming that all mechanics are brilliant and will only sell a car that's in top top condition or can we agree that it's hit or miss? I'd be far more careful buying a motor off a mechanic. Not all of them throw money at their cars just like not all of them will be trying to wipe your eye. If there's anyone that's going to be able to hide a problem it's going to be a mechanic.
I'd say it depends totally on the individual mechanic - any i know have always maintained their cars really well. You are obssed with Escort Cosworths. 405 is likely to last longer as IIRC they have galvanised bodies
