Ok rocko and r16vka (ryan) have both advised that due to my budget (in around/above 10k)for a new car, I could essentially look at cars 1k over budget and be able to bargain down. Does this seem reasonable? Reason I ask is Im currently considering whether i need to up my budget to get the spec i want, or stick to my guns, especially as some girl had her car advertised at 10500 and was accepting offers, but then refused to reduce her price by any more than 45!!!!
You'll not really get a definitive answer on this from the forum members here, the only way you will know is when you try and haggle with each seller. Some people won't budge on price, others will happily drop anything from £50 to £1000 .... depends how desperate they are to sell.
Yep £45, then I told her Id meet her half way and she said no, but if I met her asking price and paid her bf's ferry she would have it taken to Dublin, which worked out about £200 more expensive for me, I dont think she understands bargaining.
Arrange to meet the guy in Dublin anyway, bring £10000 and wave it under his nose. He can either take the money or pay to take it home on the boat.
If you're looking to spend about £10k then I'd be looking up to £11/11.5k, especially if you're being quite specific about specification. You've more chance of finding the right car and just up the budget to get it. That's what I did, tho I ended up going from £8k to £11k lol
Yeah, seems as though thats the case, but i know the spec is out there at my money, just harder to get. Generally the spec is easier to get in the 2007 models, but with that, the model changed slightly with keyless entry, push to start, piano black interior etc so there is usually a bit of a jump in cost.
Every seller anticipates a 10% haggling reduction. I'll always list my cars for more than what I expect to receive. As a buyer, if I don't get money off I'll not buy the car, stick to the price you can afford less a few quid so you can meet in the middle. I'll leave a number though and will saunter back to my car to leave slowly incase the seller has a sudden re-think . Works 99% of the time. Also, sounds like this seller is not local. How have you been haggling? Only way to do it is to have the cabbage sitting, right under their nose and make sure you don't seem that fussed on the car, and expect to walk away when you go see the car (ie don't get too excited about it - can be hard sometimes).
depends on the person i suppose, they obviously know how keen you are on the motor stuarty so they have the upper hand.. if you are patient you could make a final 'this is my final offer' and let it cool off and see if they come back to accept, failing that and its the exact car and spec at good money then dont let it slip over a few quid if its 'really' what you want
She was in liverpool and knew that i was more than content to get myself home if the car wasnt as advertised! I basically told her that if the car was exactly as stated I would be happy to pay her £x and worked from there and if there was anything i wasnt happy with, I would reflect that in what i was offering or I'd just walk. As far as that particular seller knows Chris, all I wanted was an astra, I didnt tell her that the one she had matched the spec i wanted. Ive left it with her, she knows what I am willing to pay. Thing is, shes had it for sale for 4 weeks with 1 viewer and still wouldnt work with anything more than £45 off!
Thing is though, if you ring the right car for you, itd be silly to let it for for the sake of £500. A friend recently bought a 5 series, advertised for £999 no offers, he was trying to get it for around £800 but ended up paying £970 odd cause he didnt want to not have it for the sake of a few quid.
HAHA you serious? Nope not on the phone, emailing/texting etc, suppose you are right, gives her the chance to think before speaking etc. I know what you are saying, but theres only so far I can stretch with travelling etc
From my own experience what happens is that you get an offer via email then they use that as a base to start haggling from when they turn up. I've got to the stage now that I'll not haggle via email (or do just as she has done and only drop a few quid) but offer the person down to see the car first before talking money... I made this mistake once and dropped £500 on a car via email as a done deal provided the car was as described (which it was). The guy then used that as a base to haggle from. I told him to head on home again as I wasn't dealing - he did eventually buy it, but still £50 below what we had agreed on. It was lots of ballache at the time because I just wouldn't budge any more even though I'd dropped £500 it seemed like I wasn't negotiating and being a bit of an arse about it. Thing is, if she dropped to 10k now, you could be likely to land up and offer 9500. Happens ALL the time. I think in this scenario she is just right.
my uncle used to get friends and family to ring up for a car advertised over the space of two weeks offering silly money i.e 2000 below asking price etc, an get my dad to go see car and nosey round it kicktyres etc, then my uncle would appear knight in shining armour and offer higher than ''other offers' the seller 99% of time would be happy to get better offer and sell lol.
sounds like a right stupid bint. i reckon she will take 10,000 eventually when she realises there has been no offers. hopefully not too late for you though
£10,400 was the lowest she would give me the car for. Considering I have the drive down from Edinburgh
thats not a great reason to not buy a good car. if your going to see a car in the first place the price in the ad must have been reasonable to you. i usually price my cars a bit lower then you get a quicker sale cos its a lower price than other ones advertised, but i dont take as much haggling as you'd expect off the higher priced ones, so it ends up the same price anyway lol
I went to Agnews a fortnight ago with a strict budget in mind, and ended up £5k over. The shame of it all.
depends how much its selling for really. @ Coog, Id not let paying asking price put me off a car, if I wanted it Id have it.
