Has anyone any good or bad experiences of the BMW 2.2 petrol engine? Thinking about a semi-sensible sized engine weekend car as it will probably only do 1-2k a year...2002 Z3

2.0/2.2/2.4/2.5/2.8 are all variants of the M52 engine and I've only ever heard that they are reliable engines.

Surely if its only a weekend car then you'd buy a bigger engine and give the thing a bit of power!? 168bhp isn't going to be particularly exciting to drive.

I want one of the late ones so the only other option is the 3.0...Z3Ms are silly money still :D The 7.6 0-60 and 139 top end arnt goin to be too far off the Vectra performance and Im more than likely to get caught doin silly things in an M3 :( Thought the 2.2 gives the 6 cylinder noise and is sensible enough for the other half to drive occassionally too! Ill give one a test drive and see what I think! Was just slightly worried about the double vanos in them after all the E36 M3 Evo horror stories! Its an M54B22 as far as I know!

I'd the 2.5 in my E46, silky smooth and very very quiet. You could barely hear the thing tick over. To the best of my knowledge, they are a reliable engine, they all have the double vanos and I've not heard of them failing anything like the E36 Evo's did!

Yea that's the right engine code (y)

ive an e36 323 as everyday ride and its really silent on idle i , got out only the other day forgetting it was on ( after fitting my disklock)

Great mpg and torque is good also, apprently a 328 or 325 inlet manifold frees the car up no end, soo ive been told feck knows.

mines a 2.2 and its great, reasonable power and economy too. You will never tire of the noise or how smooth it is, best car I've ever had

On another note BMW never make it easy 320 with a 2.2 engine and 318 with 2.0 lumps.

The 2.2 is definitely a good compromise between a power and and refinement.

Cheers guys! I was out a run in one today! Certainly wouldnt have a hope of keeping up with the Vectra but definitely a nice driving car! Think I might have found a replacement for the Vectra already if it sells!

Vectra should sell no problem. Are you going to go for the 2.2 then?

Im not sure yet but its a strong possibility! Insurance is a bit steeper than the Vectra but not much! An M3 is 3 times what Im paying at the moment and when I only do about 1-2k in a year in the car its expensive!
