1 Series servicing is condition based so the car's OBC will tell you what it needs and when. Have a look through the service menu - it tells you how in your manual

Your dash tells you what item is due to be serviced.

If its only oil needing done I doubt bmw were looking £280+vat.

On Board Computer. As Jas says the dash tells you what's needed. For £280 prob needs oil, oil filter and micro filter and possibly brake fluid. I'm guessing this though, what did BMW say you needed that would cost £280?

I spoke to BMW dealer today he asked for the cars reg number then he informed me that the car needed a full service.
my own mechanic only charges £45 for a service but he would rather you buy your own things as he does not have time to go to the car parts store.

no need to go near BMW with a 2006 1 series.

any decent garage will be able to tell you what needs changed

you could buy the filters yourself out of a motor factors then ask someone to fit them for you. save yourself a pound or two

BMW would be the last place I would take it.

1 series service should be around 170 to 200 from an independent garage. Diagnostic machines can tell you what it needs. Expect oil, air, fuel, pollen and of course oil to be done and your service light reset.

This is just based on cars we have done before. Hope this helps.

You dont need a diagnostics machine to tell you what it needs, its all clear to see on the dash and easy to reset too lol

Jesus Christ. I'd never look to a on board computer to tell me what a car needs.

How many miles has it done, & what has been changed before?

Its CBS servicing and its stored on the key as well, its very accurate and is what the dealers go on to service the car.

On the limited info youve provided as to the cars miles, last service, history etc Jas Lad is spot on, up to date dealer stamps in the service book and the OBC reset to the appropriate intervals for the items changed! As Jas also said it's a very accurate system, my only gripe with that service schedule would be i wouldnt be running it for the 16K between oil changes or whatever it is, I think that should be more often but I guess you could always just give her an oil change between that and not reset the OBC

I'd be taking a 6 year old car like that to a decent independent, no point paying dealer prices for a car that's years out of warranty. It'll not make much, if any difference to the value...just be sure it's a recognised BMW independent with a good rep.

The LL04 oil is the reason for the long service intervals, not a fan myself but guess it must work.

Yea i guess your right, although id have my doubts it would be good for a car that made a lot of short journeys for instance? What you reckon?

Wouldnt really matter, as your CBS knocks more miles off at a faster rate to compensate for short journeys, must be engine temp vs time vs mileage.

Apparently it's based how many litres of fuel the car uses.

Interesting stuff, must keep an eye one mine as i've got a much shorter drive to work now so should see the (>miles to service) fall a a faster rate than before

the OBC only tells you so much it wont tell you about Air and fuel filters as these are done inconjunction with and oil service, it is usually the every 3rd oil change but depending on the year it could be every 2nd oil change

all depends on millage as to what i would be recommending.

Its nothing new to BMW, the systems been in place since e36 days, green bars go out faster the harder you drive the car and short journeys.
