Just a few questions really, always had my heart set on a e60 530D Sport but for the one I want i'll probably have to spend atleast 13-15k and I just don't think there worth it!

So seen that facelift X5's are looking to be good VFM, given they do a good 30mpg, handle well and look the part in the right colours.

Thing is i've read internet forums till im sick and the usual things come up, but due to the sheer number of them on the road I can't see it being half as bad as being made out?

I know the facelift 04+ comes with the 6speed ZF autobox compared to the old 5GM box which was meant to be a bag of bolts. I've heard many stories of even indys doing gearbox rebuilds @ £2k cost?

Has anyone had any trouble with their 6speeders, either chain issues on the transfer box or the gearbox itself, ie its functions, surging, holding gears, changing on its own etc etc.

Also have you had any other issues, such as injectors or turbos?

    Any input much appreciated :)

No why? It doesnt take much thinking to know that if I want a sub 80k e60 530D with xenons/black leather/nice colour/19s its going to be over 13k.

I don't think your getting the jist of the post here. Asking for genuine advice on an X5, not my outlook on e60's.

Good luck with 30mpg. I play golf with a guy that had an 09 plate diesel x5 and averaged 22-25mpg driving from Bangor to belfast and back daily off peak. He took it back to bavarian and got a slightly more frugal x3. Saying that he did have a new 3 litre D A5 for a while and changed it for the x5. Never understood that one.

Buy one with a warranty, or buy an aftermarket warranty for it. Takes a lot of worry out of these things and makes decisions much easier. (y)

Don't seem to be too many with warranty on them, that one of Rik's was as nice looking as they come, perfect spec too.

my bro in law has had one from new, 90k on it now, apart from routine servicing he's never had a problem, apart from the horrific price a replacement run flats:eek:

Yeah his was nice, although for me it would have to be Le Mans Blue with the 4.8is kit etc.

How much do Warranty Direct charge for a years warranty? Even if you bought one without warranty, if all servicing has been done on time by BMW dealers, you can put a lapsed warranty on it. Just call JKC/Bavarian with chassis number to check if it's eligible.

Less than 60k examples I think are £600, then it gets scary after 60k afaik

Checked warranty direct and there £550 for the year on a 70-80k example 3.0D

Really dont like the IS kit, looks a bit cheap imo, like the arch extensions though they are a 3-400 option to retrofit!

Check out the AA highest rate of breakdown cover. It will pay out up to £500 each time theres a fault with your car for parts and labour at a garage.

Miss it :( Maybe getting old and boring but prefer it without the kits and with smaller wheels

Probably a nice thing to drive about in but I think they look very dated now, particularly compared to the new model which is a much, much nicer and more significant looking motor.

Personally i think those X5s look horribly dated and there is no way I'd ever pick one over an e60! Current model X5 is lovely, but also a fortune :(

In all seriousness, the only reason the Autobox gives bother is like anything with oil in it, lack of maintence, for the price of getting the ATF from BMW along with the Strainer and whatever gaskets/bolts needed, its cheaper than a 2nd hand Gearbox or Rebuilt one

Turbo Filter also needs done every 3rd oil change, and they're about £50/£60 from BMW

Bare in mind this all needs done on an E39 or an E60!

The autobox is supposed to be non serviceable, the cost of the correct fluids is significant enough too should you want to replace it though.
Regarding warranties, a 200x x5 with less than 60k miles will run to around 500-540 for the year with warranty direct. Once you hit 60k your premium goes up a few percent and you pay 10% of the repair costs. When it his 70k you pay 20% etc etc.
We had trouble finding a garage who would work with them without demanding payment from me then having to go to WD.
I got fed up after a couple of years and am no longer paying for a warranty, I already replaced the autobox 5k ago and the engine is very reliable. Electrics are my only worry should anything go wrong.

I've had my 3.0D Leman edition for 15 months now and had absolutely no mechanical problems with it yet. Tbf when I got it(66k) I changed every fluid and filter in it including the gearbox oil and filter and have changed the oil every 4k since :). Basically once the first green light goes out it goes on ramp for oil and filter . As for mpg mine has averaged 29 since I have owned it but I do drive mine extremely gently as I don't want trouble from it. My mate also has one one and drives his like he stole and it does 20 mpg. The only real problems I've had is I've had to put a few bushes in it but hey it's a big tub with 80k on it so that's not exactly a shocker and isn't the end of the world either.

My sis has one that I sold her over 4yrs ago, it was a couple of years old at the time from memory and one of the 1st of the facelift model, and nigh-on identical to the grey one above. She did get it re-mapped to make it easier on fuel as she drives like a maniac and other than a few rear bushes it has never looked behind it. Her only complaint is that it is quite hard and the bolster on the drivers seat is starting to wear a little, even with her being very careful indeed. She gets nearly 30mpg all the time and trust me, she ain't shy with the throttle!
